A Review in the Shape of a Barbie Catalog
“A Visceral Scroll through the Smokelong Quarterly Barbie Catalog"
In this year of movie inspired Barbie discussions, ongoing confusions about feminists and feminisms, and depressing political challenges to women’s rights in the United States, I am grateful to the editors at Smokelong Quarterly for publishing my essay/review on the large number of Barbie stories that have run during the magazine’s impressive, ongoing twenty-year publication history. This “dark” Barbie catalog of sorts features stories by fantastic Smokelong Quarterly writers who make Mattel’s new “Weird Barbie” look like...well, child’s play.
Read my essay/review/catalog here: A Visceral Scroll through Smokelong Quarterly Barbie Catalog. And then read the stories that inspired it. Here’s to twenty more years at Smokelong Quarterly!
Barbie is a symbol of American femininity, through her beauty and glamor. Not sure why this cultural icon is so maliciously mocked by fun-hating feminists.
